7 Story Ideas to Kick-Start Your Imagination

Sometimes one of the hardest things about writing is coming up with the first idea. Or finding the next plot point that will set your imagination on fire. I’ve found that one of the best ways to overcome this problem is to think about possible stories, even if they have nothing to do with your own, because somewhere there will a kernel that leads your mind down all kinds of interesting paths. That little piece of inspiration could set your imagination on fire and your pen to writing.

So to help you all in your writing (and maybe myself too), I’ve come up with 7 story ideas to kick start your imagination. You can take these ideas and create a whole story from them, or use them as a starting point and create your own. Either way, I’m happy to help my fellow writers. Why not leave a comment with your own story ideas? Or tell me where you think these plots will end?

Idea1) There is a big storm coming and you don’t know whether to stay or go when a homeless man comes to your door begging for shelter.

2) Your character’s friend is afraid of heights but is found dead after jumping from the 40th floor, there’s something not right about this but the investigator is set on a suicide case, a little too set.

3) Your character has magical powers but every time they use their gift somebody dies, when is the cost too great?

4) Earth is about to be destroyed. Your character is in command of the only space shuttle. Who stays and who goes? Where do they go?

5) A terrible disease has broken out and is spreading fast. How do we survive? Did someone release it intentionally?

6) In an alternate history women were given the ability to vote at the same time as men. How would the world be different today?

7) An asteroid has hit Earth and caused it to tilt, the change has made the northern hemisphere uninhabitable whilst Antarctica is heating up fast and the oceans are rising.

I hope these ideas give you something to write about and get your pen moving. What great story ideas do you have? How do you get inspiration?
